Moving from a Mugshot to a professional Headshot

Driving past billboards and estate agent signs recently got me thinking about the difference between a mugshot and a headshot. Some estate agent signs did not stir a massive vote of confidence in the agent or person in the image. It reminded me more of an image captured to have a photo of them on the billboard. It did not give me confidence in the person or their abilities. How do I know that I can trust them? Will they be able to do the service required? Will they be able to sell my home? Do I want to do business with them?

But what is a mugshot? A mugshot is a photographic portrait of a person from the shoulders up, showcasing all their facial features. It is typically used for identification cards and passports, but the Police also take it after the person has been arrested.

In contrast, a headshot is a modern portrait that showcases the person’s confidence and personality, not just facial features. It has several uses, from professional profile images on social media to the company’s website and marketing material where your name and face are linked to the sale.

Everybody forms a first impression. First impressions of you/your company and what you represent are already created when some look at your marketing material or billboard. Do you trust someone if their picture already says they do not value themselves and what they are selling? The question is, what do you want to convey? Is it going to be good or bad? Was your image an afterthought, or was it intentional?
